“If you are looking to improve your Spanish skills (regardless of level) in a short period, then look no further than Celas Maya. I enrolled in a 6-week course and stayed in a homestay, and it was well worth it.

Next for the Spanish school: I entered Celas Maya knowing hardly any Spanish (except for the basics I learned in high school 16 years ago), but I left Xela school with a level of Spanish I thought I could never achieve.”

Students value the commitment and dedication of teachers who are well-qualified in teaching Spanish and passionate about teaching and cultural exchange. The best Spanish school in Xela! Their level of professionalism and the extensive (and ongoing) training of their instructors set them apart. (Of course, they are all lovely people too!) Everyone I met was friendly and fun to talk to. I thought the high quality of instruction and the experience that comes with the certification from Instituto Cervantes were worth the price. It also meant that the other students took learning seriously and practiced when we were out of class together. (I didn’t come to Xela to speak English with other gringos, did I?) I can’t recommend Celas Maya highly enough!

I enjoyed my time learning at Celas-Maya! My goal was to learn about the Mayan cultures as well as use my Spanish at a higher level; my teacher was Kich’e. Although I was only there for two weeks, since each student works on one with a teacher, it is intense, and I learned a lot. Everyone was very friendly, and the administration was organized and professional. Many of the students are beginners or intermediates, and the afternoon activities and homestays allow students to use their language skills in real-life situations. Xela is not touristy, so one will not run into people on the street corner with whom to speak English; it can be a true immersion experience. My favorite trips were to the Georgian Springs, Cantel, and the Ixkik Museum (Mayan clothing).

“I have had the opportunity to study at Celas Maya twice: once on my own twenty years ago and once recently for two weeks with my wife. Both experiences were wonderful! The teachers were a pleasure to be with and were professional, spoke, and taught extremely clear Spanish. The individual class format was customized to our specific learning needs, and the teachers made sure to identify our goals each week with a structured lesson plan. My 4 hours a day went by very quickly. Every afternoon there was an optional activity: trips to nearby villages, cooking classes, and Guatemalan slang lessons, all of which helped us immerse ourselves in Guatemalan culture. Finally, the space is a beautiful colonial edificio with a lovely courtyard and a new espresso bar where we enjoyed a nice cup of coffee or tea during breaks. If you want to learn Spanish, I highly recommend Celas Maya!
