Center for Linguistic, Anthropological, and Social Studies Maya – CELAS MAYA

The name “Celas Maya” reflects the school’s commitment to offering a unique approach to Spanish learning, where students not only acquire the language but also immerse themselves in the culture, history, and social aspects of the region. Quetzaltenango, where the school is located, is deeply influenced by Maya heritage, providing an ideal backdrop for this educational experience.

The school’s focus is on total immersion, with students learning Spanish in a setting that integrates the Maya legacy. This environment allows for a deeper understanding of both the language and the society, enriching the learning process.

At Celas Maya, students gain linguistic skills while exploring the anthropological and social dimensions of Guatemala, making their experience more meaningful. The historical and cultural richness of the region offers a context that enhances the language-learning journey, turning each lesson into an exploration of the local way of life.

The Building

Celas Maya’s 1880s home is an architectural gem, showcasing craftsmanship with thick walls and the traditional “bajareque” technique. Tranquil corridors with wooden posts echo days past, while stone foundations add charm. Nestled near Quetzaltenango’s cobbled streets and the iconic “Puente de los Chocoyos,” the building whispers history, preserving a bygone era’s pace. Celas Maya’s edifice honors architectural brilliance and grace in Quetzaltenango’s rich history.

The City

Nestled high in the Sierra Madres at 2,335 meters (7,660 feet), Xela, is a captivating city known for its mountainous backdrop, Mayan culture, and cobblestone streets. It’s a vibrant university town with various institutions, a bustling café scene, and active nightlife. Modern amenities, historical landmarks, and a charming city centre make it an ideal destination. Xela enjoys a moderate climate, with temperatures ranging from 70-80°F (21°C) during the day and 45°F (7°C) at night. Pack accordingly for chilly mornings and comfortable daytime explorations.

The People

While indigenous culture has no boundaries in Guatemala, Xela rightly claims to be at the heart of everything Maya, beautiful in its diversity. Xela is the second most important commercial city in the country and is the place where people come from small villages, many miles away, in order to sell their goods in the market. Women in their traditional dress fit in just as easily as men wearing smart-looking suits and carrying briefcases.
